Social Media is dead!

Recently I was thinking about the pervalence of social media sites. I am of the opinion that they are the reality TV of the internet technology. In the sense that there’s no great innovation behind them. There’s no real renaissance that’s happening. Only a re-packaging of existing material. Reading this article on Startup North I find myself agreeing with him. The fact of the matter is that in the end social media is merely a platform for the lazy.

News

For the past 2 or 3 days the western media has been satisfying their macabre obsession with a murder case of a little girl. The news that a possible suspect is arrested has been plastered all over newspapers, and TV. It turns out today that the confessions they got from the guy seem very contradictory with facts. No matter, the brave western media marches on in search of truth. The little girl’s face is on all daily newspapers and everyone is searching for answers.

Meanwhile the death toll in Lebanon hits 1,300 and more than a third are children. Perhaps if the children in Lebanon all had Anglo-Saxon names, and were aspiring beauty queens we would see their photos on the dailies here in the west.

Another Month

Another month and the humans have managed to yet again kill each other. There’s nothing new in that, but this time I think I’m seeing more and more how the little people are helpless in fighting injustices committed against them. No one gives a damn. And it’s these kinds of events that trigger in people the need to have some divine power to exist. When the oppressed can’t have justice, that’s when they wish for other-worldly justice to be delivered to their oppressors.

Something

I need to do some thinking… I have realized that people are two-faced. Especially most of the ones I know! Ok, maybe not two-faced but very insincere. Perhaps I just need to cope with it, smile and go on with the realization that I should take everything with a grain of salt.

Job satisfaction

I’ll speak a little about job satisfaction. Not the term used by HR during the first week on the job, the real notion. First, I have a job that is in my area of studies (and interest) as well as a very enjoyable working environment. After a few months here, my short attention span is kicking in. I’m not excited to get to work, and I’m not too keen on getting in the “zone” and working like crazy! I’ve come to attribute this to a lack of really challenging work.

Management Types

I’ve always had a natural dislike for people who manage people. These are people who are masters of double-talk, vague-speak, and overall undecipherable talk that generally sounds good. I’m talking about the kind of speak that makes the speaker sound informed on the topic without ever giving any insight into the truth of the matter. These are people who, when asked anything, will give you a long winded explanation that will not give you the slightest answer!

Frustrations

You study for 4 years. Subject yourself to a variety of stress tests.. to see how much your body can handle. Late nights, early mornings… cram sessions.. Endless hours spent peering at a monitor. At first the experiences are too fun, and you don’t have a bigger picture. But what next?
How about a job? no, thank you.
But you’ll be bored at home, and you have to contribute to society! Fine!

Now you’re stuck in a farm of cubicles, peering into many screens. You go in every morning, determined to do something useful. You end up spending your time pointlessly playing around. Pointlessly typing away at your keyboard. So this is what it’s like to be part of society. What happened to all the energy you had, the enthusiasm? As the saying goes…
“bezar dareh koozeh abesho bokhor”
( بذار در کوزه آبشو بخور  ).
These days I try to live my life through other people’s lives. Reading other people’s real experiences on their websites. Watching people live their lives on TV. A while back I was reading about a guy who studied the same thing as myself in university, but got tired of the monotonous life, and opted to be a bike messenger. And by sheer coincidence, I got in touch with another friend who is in south America, going from country to country, and living the hell out of life!

The Contract

We live in a modern society. We have human rights, workers’ rights, and a lot of those social security measures that will hold the fibres of our society together if any of its members fall on hardship. Some of these measures are considered basic human rights. But in reality, we don’t extend these rights to people below a certain class (and nationality). We are after profits, profits, and nothing more. All this can be witnessed within an hour. All you have to do is sit in front of your TV (or computer, in some cases) and watch El Contrato. And it’s not an issue of racism. We don’t have much of that here. It’s a matter of classism. A matter of who you are exploiting. If the oppressed have no outlet for their frustration, and are locked in a cycle to provide for their families all you have to do is push them and they will obey. As the exploitation of migrant workers continues, we remain convinced of our righteousness. Of how correct we are. We are peacekeepers, multi-cultural and human rights advocates.

Oh Canada!
